Core Academic Vocabulary in Four Genres of Novice Student Writing

Since written assignments often constitute the main form of assessment in tertiary education, academic writing skills are paramount importance to university students. The role turn emphasises two aspects vital for successful production at universities: genre awareness as students assessed on relevant genres and use vocabulary regarded a key element style. This study employs corpus-based approach explore usage four produced by multilingual foundation-level (N=193) UK university. findings show that all there was small set core used majority their assignments, accounting average approximately 3.6% - 9% types across under investigation. In addition, differences were found distribution function items genres. These have potentially important pedagogical implications English Academic Purposes (EAP) contexts catering novice student writers.
